In addition to Wine Lister’s collaboration with Wine-Searcher (recap our latest blog here), Part II of its annual Bordeaux study, titled “How's the patient?”, analyses figures collated by our auction data partner, Wine Market Journal.

Wine Lister analyses the sales of the world’s leading auction houses between 2022 and 2023  to determine the growth of 125 wines included in its report. Only wines with an auction volume of more than 500 bottles in 2023 have been included. The volume of bottles traded at auction is an indicator of demand and liquidity in the secondary market.

While starting from a lower base in 2022, Clarence de Haut-Brion sees a four-fold increase in volume at auction this year, managing to top the annual rankings in 2023. Bélair-Monange is in second place (161% increase), followed by Le Gay, which gained 122% since 2022 and is also featured in the list of top 20 online popularity performers.

Looking at the appellations of the top auction performers, Saint-Émilion takes a quarter of the top spots (with Beau-Séjour Bécot, Bélair-Monange, Coutet, La Gaffelière, and Larcis-Ducasse), closely followed by Pessac-Léognan, Saint-Estèphe, and Saint-Julien, who each occupy three places.
