Above: highest 2024 release price discounts on average market price of the last 10 vintages (£)
Wine Lister has published Part II of its annual Bordeaux study, ‘Waiting on a miracle’, which examines the quality and pricing of the 2024 vintage, and looks at the wines that have performed best in terms of search rank and auction volumes over the past year.
While much of the en primeur conversation focuses on discounts relative to last year’s release prices, the study includes a comparison of 2024 release prices to the three-month average market prices of the previous 10 vintages. Looking at wines that have been released before or on Tuesday 3rd June (when the study was produced), this provides an alternative benchmark for consumers assessing the value of the vintage.
The list above features 44 wines with the largest discounts between their 2024 recommended UK release price (£) and average market price (£). Of this group, the average discount on their mean market price is -39.25% (compared to -30%, the average of the 105 wines released so far).
The list is headed by juggernaut brands, including three first growths – Margaux, Lafite Rothschild, and Mouton Rothschild – in the top 10, while Léoville Las Cases stands out with the greatest discount at -48%. 33 out of the 44 wines listed in the study are situated on the Left Bank, while the highest-ranking appellation is Margaux, with nine wines appearing in the top 44 pictured above. Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe, and Saint-Julien follow with seven wines on the leaderboard, respectively.
