Now four weeks into Bordeaux’s 2023 en primeur campaign, Wine Lister examines the top five wines by Wine Lister score within each major appellation (separated by mere decimals to ensure precision).
First growths Latour, Mouton Rothschild, and Lafite Rothschild retain their same positions on the list of top Pauillac wines in 2023, while sporting lower scores than in 2022 (down 0.6, 0.9, and 1.3 points, respectively). Similarly, Pichon Comtesse and Pichon Baron retain their positions in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Pessac-Léognan’s highest-scoring 2023, Haut-Brion, maintained its first-place position since 2022, while La Mission Haut-Brion moved from second place in 2022 down to fifth place in 2023. Three of these top-five wines (Haut-Brion, Haut-Bailly, and Smith Haut Lafitte) make it into the top 30 ranking of Bordeaux 2023s across all appellations.
Pomerol, which assumes 22% of places on the top-30 list, appears as the highest-scoring appellation overall. Pomerol has seen the one of the greatest variations in its top-five list over the past three vintages. Vieux Château Certan secured first place in 2022 (down five places in 2023), while Trotanoy featured in fifth place (down two places in 2023). This year, La Conseillante reigns in Pomerol with 96.3 points.
The second-highest scoring appellation in 2023, Saint-Émilion sees all its top-five wines appear in the Bordeaux's 30 best-scored list. Figeac, which takes the gold medal in 2023 with 96.5 points, appeared in second position in 2022, having swapped places with Cheval Blanc this year. Pavie, sitting at number four, is the biggest climber in this appellation, moving up five places since 2022.
Saint-Estèphe sees its top-four scorers in 2022 repeated in 2023. Haut-Marbuzet, in fifth position this year, climbed three places since 2022. Montrose was one of two Saint-Esèphe entries in the overall top-30 list, alongside Cos d’Estournel.
Léoville Las Cases takes the lead in Saint-Julien with 95.6 points, followed by Ducru-Beaucaillou (95.2 points), and Léoville Poyferré (94.8 points). Those in the top four mirror that of 2022, however Léoville Barton trumped Beychevelle for fifth place this year, occupying sixth place in 2023.
In Margaux, the namesake first growth takes the third spot in the list of the top-30 Bordeaux 2023s by Wine Lister score, having been one of just three wines that saw an overall increase in their score from 2022 (by 0.2 points, alongside Suduiraut and L'Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne). The wines appearing in the top five have remained the same since 2021, although Margaux and Palmer switched their 2022 positions in 2023.
The top-scoring wine in Sauternes and Barsac is Suduiraut, which, with a score of 96.8, sees the greatest increase in Wine Lister score in 2023 (increasing 1.1 points) and appears second on the list of 30 top-scoring Bordeaux 2023s by Wine Lister score. L'Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne follows closely behind with 96.3 points, and appears seventh on this list.
Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc leads the way for dry whites in 2023 with 94.2 points, taking the top spot in this category, and coming in at 45th place overall. This list features the same five dry whites that featured in 2022 (although La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc has moved down four places from the top spot in 2022).
